Jody’s Joyride

Losing a parent is one of life’s most profound and challenging experiences. When my dad passed away on July 27, 2024, it felt like a piece of my soul was lost forever. Yet, amid the sorrow and heartache, I found solace in the musical legacy he left behind—a legacy that continues to inspire me every day.

My dad had a unique gift for music that he shared with our family. Some of my core memories from childhood involve him playing the guitar and singing to me. No matter how tough the day had been, those melodies had a magical way of making everything better.

Dad wasn’t just a household musician; he was a lead guitarist for a surf rock band called “The Morticians”.  I remember the gleam in his eye each time he picked up his guitar, ready to strum the first chord. It wasn't just about the notes he played—it was about the emotions he poured into every song. His music was an extension of himself, filled with the love, joy, and occasional sorrow that marked his life.

For students who might be reading this, imagine having a parent who could transform a simple evening into an unforgettable concert. That was my dad. And for parents and family members, I hope this story reminds you of the small yet significant ways you can leave a lasting impact on your loved ones.

In honor of my dad, I’ve made a personal vow to keep music close to my heart. Every time I pick up the ʻukulele, I feel his presence guiding me. I’m determined to carry forward his passion and enthusiasm, to make sure his musical legacy continues to live on.

Music has a profound way of bringing people together, of bridging gaps and creating shared experiences. It’s a universal language that speaks to the soul, and my dad understood that better than anyone. His dedication to his craft taught me the importance of having a passion and nurturing it, no matter what.

To all the families out there, I encourage you to find that one thing that binds you together. It could be music, art, sports, or anything that sparks joy and creativity. Nurture it, cherish it, and pass it on to the next generation. These shared experiences are the threads that weave the fabric of our lives, creating a tapestry of memories that will last forever.

Rest in aloha Dad. Love you and miss you…
